Just wanted to pass along what we talked about at our latest board meeting last week. Dr. Jones asked us to think about ways to work on recruitment and retention in the orchestra, so feel free to pass along your ideas as well.
Our first steps include:
- Updating the official DPA webpage. As nostalgic as I'm sure we all are for Spring 2007 (ah, the season of the Final Four run...), most of our membership has changed since then. We also want to include a bit more about each of the members (like hometown and major) in order to show that we are a pretty diverse group of people--not just music majors/minors.
- Updating audition requirements to make sure that they're clear and everyone knows what is expected of them. One of the main reasons we've heard people say they don't try out for orchestra is because the auditions sound intimidating, or that they don't understand what they need to do.
- Coming up with a logo design to use for the website/shirts/programs/etc.
- Trying to get coverage in university papers for concerts like theater does for shows.
- Having some say in what we play.
- Creating a department list-serv to allow community members to subscribe and find out about upcoming performances.
- Increasing contact with incoming music students through NSO activities and continuing to call incoming freshmen over the summer with information on the music program.
- Investigating the possibility of touring as an ensemble, both locally and abroad.
